In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For my main product of my coursework, I need to create a teaser trailer to advertise my film as part of the marketing campaign. Before I started planning for my film, I had to do research on the conventions found in both theatrical and teaser trailers. I compared the two as I thought it would be useful when it came to knowing what conventions to include when it came to my teaser trailer.
From analysing the differences I learnt that teaser trailers are shorter and contain a lot less details about the narrative, as the whole idea of a teaser trailer is to create a buzz within the target audience and make them want to find out more and later see the film. I then started look specifically at teaser trailers as I wanted to get a better understanding of what conventions are found in teaser trailers, as opposed to trailers on a whole, so that when it came to my teaser trailer I could make it look as authentic as possible. I have looked at 5 different teasers trailer that belong to different genres as I wanted to see what the conventions of teaser trailers are rather than the conventions of a particular genre.
I found that all the teaser trailers from different genres share the same conventions. The similar conventions found include; taglines, music, a series of shots and different camera angles, sound effects, production company logo, release date and so on.
Once I had decided what genre my film was going to be, I wanted to see if teaser trailers within that genre shared some of the same conventions, so I analysed 4 films from the Film Noir genre. This helped me when it came to creating my own teaser trailer as I knew certain conventions that would appear in most noir teaser trailers and included these conventions in my teaser trailer making it more authentic.
