Evaluation Question - 4
Evaluation Question:
How did you use the media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
For my research, planning and evaluation I have decided to display this in the form of a blog, to do this I had to create a blogger account along with accounts for Soundcloud and Youtube, so I could include sound files and videos regularly to my blog to make my research, planning and evaluation appear more interesting and include important things such as teaser trailers, magazine covers and posters.
Using a blog to show my research, planning and evaluation has been useful as it is easy to organise and mage takes and is much more immersive to an audience as it is not only writing but contains images, sound files and even videos these different forms of media also help support my research.
Here is the first draft of my magazine cover
Editing My Magazine Cover:
To fill my teaser trailer I used a digital video camera (Panasonic HDC TM900). I was easy to use and allowed me film as many shots as I need and delete the ones I didn't like.
To edit my teaser trailer I used premiere pro. The technology allowed me to easily upload my shots and separate them into various editing bins. This made it easier for me to access my shots when I needed them. I had separate bins for music, voiceover, titles and production company logo, the advantage of organising it like this was that it made the whole editing process easier and quicker. As I had created a shot list previously I already had a rough idea of the running order, this again made the editing process easier as I already had an idea of what shot should go where. The multi track feature allowed me to separate the sound and visual meaning I could had the background music/voiceover easily.
As I wanted to do a voiceover I had to write and record it separately. I used Adobe Audition 1.5, it allowed me to easily record and transfer to Premier Pro.
Once I had decided what music I wanted to use in my trailer I went onto spotify, recorded it and transferred it to Premier Pro, where I created a separate layer so that I could change and edit the sound, placing it in the right place and making sure the level of volume was right.

Photoshop allowed me to create my poster and magazine cover. It allowed me to manipulate images, alter the filters, create the billing and include taglines, production company logos, cover lines and all the conventions found on posters and magazine covers.
Here is the first draft of my magazine cover
- For the black background I opened a new layer in photoshop, set it to A4 in black.
- The next step was the title, for this I set the colour of the type tool to white and used the noir medium font.
- For the next step I simple set the font to a smaller size and added the slogan, date, issue and price.
- For the next three steps I simply changed the size of the font for the coverlines, which I later moved once I had an idea of where I wanted things to go.
- For the banner I simple cropped an image of the colour I wanted and placed it where I wanted.
- To add the text I simple changed the colour from white to black.
- Once the text was done I decided to add a shadow to the coverlines, I did this by using a shadow effect, this effect enhanced both the black and in particular the white.
- For the circular banner I used the same colour image as I did for the previous step however to get a perfect circle I used Elliptical Marquee tool which allowed me to crop in the shape of a circle.
- Once again I used a shadow effect on the coverline.
- For the banner around featuring I simple cropped a rectangle using the cropping tool. Once I had done this I used the type tool and later a shadow effect for the word 'feature'.
- For the main coverline I simply used the type tool once again varying the size, but still using the noir medium font.
- For the image I used an app called glaze which allowed me to make the image appear as though it were a painting. Once the image was edited I put it onto a new layer in photoshop and used the quick selection tool to crop the dominant central image.
- The final step was to add a barcode. For this I took an image of a barcode and put it on a new layer in photoshop, adjusted the size and rotated it with the rotation tool.
- Once the magazine was complete I flattened the image (made the image one layer) by using the flatten image tool.
- For the background I create a new layer in photoshop, setting the colour to black and the dimensions to A4.
- I made a new layer this time setting the colour to golden.
- I then used the cropping tool to make the addition layer the right size.
- Once the layer was the right size I went to the filter gallery on photoshop and selected the film grain effect, which gave the layer an old fashioned feel to it.
- I then used the type tool in noir medium font (the same font I used for my teaser trailer) and wrote out the tagline.
- Using the type tool in a larger size and red rather than black but still in noir medium I wrote out the title of my film (once again the same font used in my teaser trailer).
- To write out the names of the actors in my film I used the type tool, with noir medium font and in white.
- To create the billing I used steel tong font.
- Again I used the type tool to insert a social media reference and the release date to my poster.
- For the image of the girl I used an app called graze to get the effect that the image had been hand painted.
- To crop the girl I uses the quick selection tool.
- I took an image I found and using the quick selection tool I cropped out the silhouette of the man.
- For the final step I added the production company logo, by putting the image into a new layer.
- Once I had finished editing the poster, the poster was in multiple layers so I used the flatten image to make the poster into one layer.

Evaluation Question - 3
Evaluation Question:
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout my research and planning I have consulted my audience by doing a questionnaire, asking my audiences what conventions they expect to find in posters, magazine covers and teaser trailers for Noir films.
Poster post production questionnaire:
1. Can you tell what genre the film belongs to?
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout my research and planning I have consulted my audience by doing a questionnaire, asking my audiences what conventions they expect to find in posters, magazine covers and teaser trailers for Noir films.
I have conducted a post production questionnaire for my poster, magazine cover and teaser trailer to see if the audience think they look authentic and appropriately represent the genre.
1. Can you tell what genre the film belongs to?
If so how?
2. Does the poster look authentic?
If so how?
3. Does this poster make you want too see the film?
If so why?
Magazine cover post production questionnaire?
1. Can you tell this is a cover for an independent, genre specific magazine?
If so how?
2. Can you tell this magazine is a Noir film magazine?
If so why?
3. Comparing this to existing film magazines, does this magazine cover look authentic?
If so how?
4. Do you think this magazine would catch you eye?
If so why?
5. Would you buy this magazine?
If so why?
If not why?
Teaser trailer post production questionnaire:
1. Can you tell what genre the film belongs to?
If so why?
2. Do the sound and images work in conjunction with each other?
3. Do you think the teaser trailer in authentic in comparison to existing teaser trailers?
4. Does this teaser trailer encourage you to see the film?
If so why?
If not why?
For my final question I asked the audience if they thought the different media productions worked together and made it clear they belonged to the same marketing campaign for the same film. They conclusively said it is clear to see they are advertising the same film as a result of the small consistencies found in all three products.

Evaluation Question - 2
Evaluation Question
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
In marketing campaigns they frequently use different from of media to sell the film. To show audiences that these different forms of advertising belong to the same product (film) they use a certain style of font, certain taglines and of course the title of the film, to help make it clear that they are advertising the same film. This is important as they want their target audience to be aware of the film and to have this film on their mind when choosing what film they are going to see.
Throughout my marketing campaign I have tried to use similar conventions such as the taglines and font used, for example I have used the same font in both my poster and trailer to make it clear they both belong to the same film.
This means that when audiences are looking at the poster and watching the teaser trailer it is instantly clear that they are advertising the same film. However for the magazine cover I have used a different font specific for the magazine itself which has a niche audience. This is because the production and distribution company of the film most likely doesn't own the magazine and therefore has no say in the layout and font used in the magazine. However it is likely that the films distribution company will send magazines a package containing images of the main protagonist form the film that the magazine can use.
Although the image used in my poster is different to the one used on my magazine cover they both have similar styles and are of the main protagonist, therefore it is clear for audiences that they belong to the same film. The image on the poster is unlikely to appear in the magazine as the distribution company of the film have all rights to these picture and aren't going to give the rights to any publication to use these images.
Along with using similar fronts and images, I have used similar taglines for both the teaser trailer and poster, however the taglines I have used for my teaser trailer are a lot longer than the ones used on my poster, this is due to the fact that while researching I found that the taglines that appear on posters for Noir films and films in general are shorter this way audience find it easier to remember them. To keep the idea of consistency throughout the different forms of media I have used similar words to make it obvious to audiences they are advertising the same film. The taglines don't give away they plot of the film, nevertheless they do hint at some of the films narrative drawing in the audience and creating a buzz for the film. Although the magazine cover won't contain a tagline in the same way, again as a result of the distribution company not owning the magazine, it does have a tagline that relates to the film, emphasising that the magazine will be covering the film.
I used the same billing/credits on both my poster and my teaser trailer, but I did not include them on my magazine cover, as I found while doing research it was not a convention of magazine covers. Alternatively I included cover lines that relate to reviews and features the magazine will be cover of upcoming films. Similar to this I included the same production company logos on my poster and teaser trailer and again did not put them on my magazine cover, as it is not a convention found on magazine covers.
The release date of the film is on both the poster and the teaser trailer reinforcing they belong together and are advertising the same film. The date of the Magazine September 2017 is a month before the release of the film itself. This is so the magazine can help create a buzz within the target audience, making them impatient and persuading them to see the film.

In both the teaser trailer and on the poster I have shown production company logos.
